Great Picture

Pope Benedict XVI dons a red velvet Christmas hat with white ermine trim for his weekly general audience.
And then he used his Eye-Lasers of Divine Fury™ to vaporize an unbeliever who was hiding in the crowd.

I like this new Scary Pope. I like him a lot.

Let us all heap praise upon the rat-bastard photographer for so obviously capturing the essence of the man.

Bias In ANWR Story

Pointing out mainstream media editorial bias in "news" stories never gets old. Take, for example, this Reuters story on the Senate's upcoming ANWR vote. In describing ANWR, the story points out:
The refuge, an area the size of South Carolina that sprawls along Alaska's northern coast, has been at the center of a bitter congressional debate for decades. The refuge is home to caribou, polar bears, migratory birds and other wildlife.
Imagine, a whole area the size of South Carolina defiled by drilling! What outrage! Except it's not true: the proposed drilling area constitutes 2,000 of the ANWR's 20 million acres. So if all of ANWR is "the size of South Carolina," the drilling area is the size of the Dulels Airport. That's .01% of ANWR's total. I'm sure you'll be shocked to see that isn't in the article.

Another great morsel is this bit about ANWR being home to "caribou, polar bear, migratory birds, and other wildlife." Oh, what pristine nature! The 20 million acres is home to such creatures, but the proposed drilling area - which again, is a total of 2,000 acres, .01% of the total - isn't. Here's a picture of the actual drilling area.

As you can see, it's just loaded with animals and other such wildlife! Yes, all that wasteland is just an illusion; more lies by the Republican machine, no doubt.

The reality of it is that the place is a wasteland.

Western Media Uninterested In Plight Of Hero-Martyr For Democracy Just Because Bush Endorsed Him

This is about a week old, but a must read:
Together with several colleagues, I had been trying for months to persuade the Western media to take an interest in Ganji, a former Khomeinist revolutionary who is now campaigning for human rights and democracy. But we never got anywhere because of one small hitch: President Bush had spoken publicly in support of Ganji and called for his immediate release.

And that, as far as a good part of the Western media is concerned, amounts to a kiss of death. How could newspapers that portray Bush as the world's biggest "violator of human rights" endorse his call in favor of Ganji?

To overcome that difficulty, some of Ganji's friends had tried to persuade him to make a few anti-American, more specifically anti-Bush, pronouncements so that the Western media could adopt him as a "hero-martyr."... Would Ganji adopt [this] tactic in order to get media attention in the West? The answer came last January and it was a firm no.

The result was that Ganji, probably the most outspoken and courageous prisoner of conscience in the Islamic Republic today, became a non-person for the Western media.
It gets worse from there: "UNICEF Ambassador" Bianca Jagger won't take an interest in Ganji, because there are more important prisoners to worry about -- like the terrorists in Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo.
"Is Ganji the same as the alleged terrorists in Guantanamo Bay?" I asked.

"Well, yes, I mean no, I mean yes," she mumbled. "But they are all prisoners, aren't they?"
Yep. They're all prisoners, Bianca.

Bush Fields Press Conference Question

I caught some of the President's press conference today. A reporter said, "Someone asked you this question before and you never really answered it," before continuing on in a really aggressive and disgusted manner, "My question is: what do you think is the biggest mistake you've made in your role as President so far?" (paraphase)

Bush paused and said, "When I was asked that question I really thought what they wanted to say is that going to Iraq was a mistake. It wasn't."

It was great. He called the question out for what it was. The reporters were caught with their pants down: not able to ask the President a direct question, instead just trying to put him in an awkward position.

It's disgusting to watch the media's interactions with the President. They act like they are dealing with a god awful person and dictator or something and that they need to prove their disdain with him with such open and unadulterated emotion. There's a difference between peppering the President with tough questions and all out vile hatred. That's all I see from the anti-Bush Left: all out vile hatred.

Media Bias Real, Study Finds

And it's liberal!
Of the 20 major media outlets studied, 18 scored left of center, with CBS' "Evening News," The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times ranking second, third and fourth most liberal behind the news pages of The Wall Street Journal.
Really, I didn't need a report to tell me this. This is unbiased?

In related news, scientists discovered that the sky is blue, water is wet, and the Pope is Catholic.

Is there a point to studies like this anymore? Just last year the Pew Research Center released a survey that showed that liberals outnumber conservatives in the media 5:1. That same survey showed that the media tilts to the far left of the American center on various issues.

Add in forged national guard memos, fake stories about the Qu'ran being flushed down the toilet, hurricane Katrina coverage, and every other exposed Liberal media cause of the week: it doesn't matter. Liberals will never acknowledge the monolith that is the liberal media. The New York Times could be printed on red paper with a hammer and sickle stamped on every page and the liberals of the world would still be asking, "What Liberal Media"? This new study, which comes not from a bunch of right wingers like us, but from a bastion of the left like UCLA, probably won't change their minds either.

As an aside: I love how the already scant news coverage of the Iraqi elections were quickly shunted aside in favor of heckling the President over wiretapping to intercept enemy communications, a practice that anybody who has spent five minutes looking into knows has been in existence for decades and has been non-controversial - at least, until now. Nevertheless, that never stopped media outlets such as the New York Times from flooding the news cycle with hysteria about it, completely overshadowing legitimate news like the aforementioned Iraqi elections, which need to be spread far and wide, and the President's own attempts to defend himself.

Asked by FOXNews' Tony Snow if he believed the release of the NYT story was "coincidental," Democratic strategist Bob Beckel laughed and noted that of course it wasn't. Which, in addition to being obvious to all but a few naive or willfully blind partisans, has the ironic secondary effect of proving a convergence between the Democratic party's interests and the interests of the New York Times.

Ahnuld: Tookie Terminated

And he von't be back:
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger refused to spare the life of Stanley Tookie Williams, the founder of the murderous Crips gang who awaited execution early Tuesday.... Williams, 51, is set to die by injection at San Quentin State Prison after midnight for murdering four people in two 1979 holdups. . . .

Prosecutors and victims' advocates contended Williams was undeserving of clemency from the governor because he did not own up to his crimes and refused to inform on fellow gang members. They also argued that the Crips gang that Williams co-founded in Los Angeles in 1971 is responsible for hundreds of deaths, many of them in battles with the rival Bloods for turf and control of the drug trade.
But, but, but, but... He wrote a children's book!

We don't punish famous charismatic people in this country according to their crimes! What, did I wake up this morning in Nazi Germany!

I don't know what's happened to my country.

Celebrities don't get punished. They're better than us. That's why they're celebrities.

Anti-Christmas Hysteria

This is ridiculous:
SEATTLE -- Two suburban school districts have had to do some backtracking over holiday religious issues, one for lunch menus with the words "Merry Christmas" and the other for a "giving tree." . . .

Using "Merry Christmas" on the menus violated school system policies because "it has a religious connotation for some people," Turner said.

"Our objective is to provide information to the diversity of the people that we have in our district," she said. "We try to respect each individuals point of view." . . .

"We covered the star and called it a giving tree. We hoped it would suffice, but it didn't," Metzger said. "Now we just have a giving counter."
Yeah, that's great. The best part about all this is that the same diversity-mongers who denounce Christmas as stuffing Christianity down our throats never raise a peep about forcing Jews to rename their Menorahs or Muslims to do anything about Ramadan.

I mean, I really hate all the gift giving, and weeks off and all. Who doesn't?

Jesus says NO.

Communism In Practice

Simon's Brain writes about the food co-op in Brooklyn
If you are one of those naïve people (younger than 25) who think communism is a good idea in principle, you need to spend 30 minutes in the food Coop. See how petty, bitter and mean people become when they are working for the collective. Everyone is paranoid that everyone else is shirking on their responsibilities, not working hard enough or disobeying a rule they themselves obey. I’ve been told off more times than I can count for such minor offences as leaving the queue for a moment to grab something I forgot, having 16 items in my basket instead of 15 when on line in the xpress queue, reaching over somebody’s head, not having my membership card out and ready the second it was requested and on and on... By the time you are done in there you want to shatter glass with a hysterical screaming fit.
Lies! Lies! 100 years of failure means nothing!

Kerry Lying Again

Brit Hume catches him spinning a whopper:
Senator John Kerry has repeatedly said that the president is ignoring the advice of his own commanders by not withdrawing troops from Iraq most recently telling CBS’ “Face the Nation,” "General Casey, the commander of our forces...has said the large presence of American forces in Iraq feeds the notion of occupation." In fact, Casey told the Senate Armed Services committee in September that he had a sufficient number of troops, saying, "increased coalition presence feeds the notion of occupation."

"What planet are the eco-cultists on?"

Mark Steyn writes brilliantly as usual in yesterday's Daily Telegraph about the increasing shrillness of environmental groups who advocate global climate control.

According to one member of Greenpeace who Steyn quotes:
"Global warming can mean colder, it can mean drier, it can mean wetter, that's what we're dealing with."

Got that? [asks Steyn] If it's hot, that's a sign of global warming, and, if it's cold, that's a sign of global warming.
Steyn notes that a strong economy is a prerequisite for a clean environment -- and "even the poseurs of the European chancelleries are having second thoughts. Which is why, in their efforts to flog some life back into the dead Kyoto horse, the eco-cultists have to come up with ever scarier horrors, such as that 'New Ice Age'."

Leftists Playing Loose With The Facts

The ACLU has been lying about the treatment of captured terrorists at Gitmo. Of course, many of these alleged "reports" are mined from the lamentations of the terrorists in Guantanamo Bay itself, who are trained to fabricate as many misdeeds as possible to malign their captors.

It would seem that the ACLU's goal is the release of captured al-Qaeda terrorists. It has gone to great lengths to reach that goal, using the FoIA (Freedom of Information Act) to get documents from Gitmo, then releasing the most salacious bits to the sensationalist media, knowing full well that the media will run with whatever juicy bits the ACLU releases. That drums up the anti-war movement, paints us as morally equivalent to the terrorists, and harms morale at home and abroad, while weaking our wartime leaders.

Eventually, if not fact checked, such lies become cemented as another "known fact" in the debate, like "Bush Lied!", culminating in the release of captured terrorists and kid glove treatment for any that remain in our custody, as our politicians try to burnish our national image by looking nice. That's what the McCain amendment is all about. It's about looking nice by treating transnational war criminals like jaywalkers.

Hate Mail Of The Day

"Ruthy" writes:

You jerk-offs think President ANUS FUCKHOLE is doing a good job in Iraq and that we shouldn't at least BEGIN to withdraw some troops. HAHAAH!!!! So go enlist and go over there and get shot and de-capitated! 14 more to add to the count today...Wow this war's going well! :-D

You jerk-offs also think there's a way to "WIN" the war over there...as if there's any true objective! Hahahahah! Heeeee! :-) Well, when we're still there another 4 or 5 years down the line with over 4 or 5 thousand dead, I hope you find it just as "WIN"-able! 'Cuz weez gotsta fite the insurrrrrrgents! INSURRRRRRGENTS! And TURRRRRRISTS! Hahaha!

Nice job, mac. You're a real winner. An "Ace in the Hole." Oh, wait. No, I mean just an "Asshole!" :-)

And for your information, ANUS FUCKHOLE's rating isn't up 6 points...it's down....WAAAAAAAY down...

But have fun fahtin fur freedom and democrasseeeee! HEHEHEHE!!!!

Yeeeeehaw! Yippeeeeee! We're stayin' the cawrse! Tho' in Teksus, we just call that "stupid!" :-D

Well played, Ruthy. Very well played.

I think she does a good job of balancing out the pottywords ("President ANUS FUCKHOLE"... how does she come up with stuff like this? Why doesn't she save it for her HBO special?) with cutesy emoticons like :-D. It makes as much sense as kicking someone in the shins and then giving them a big ol' wink.

Anyway, if Ruthy's comments seem a little rushed, it's because she had to get back to her job at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, splitting atoms... with her mind.

Violating The "Principles Of Western Journalism"

The LA Times is throwing a fit over the revelation that the Pentagon is funding pro-American media stories in Iraq.
Even as the State Department and the United States Agency for International Development pay contractors millions of dollars to help train journalists and promote a professional and independent Iraqi media, the Pentagon is paying millions more to the Lincoln Group for work that appears to violate fundamental principles of Western journalism.
So the big deal is that the government is funding propaganda. This is news? So what? Why shouldn't it? Propaganda is being used by the other side and has been used in every war throughout history.

So the LA Times was shocked to discover that the Pentagon was paying Iraqi media sources to publish articles that, "while factually correct, presented a positive view of the conditions in Iraq." It's not even propaganda so much as an assortment of facts that play in America's favor, highlighting positive developments, and so on.

Sure, it'll help win the war and therefore save lives, but it'll give America a fair shake! Oh no!

AP Messes Up

Another misleading lede:
As a young government lawyer opposed to abortion rights, Samuel Alito...
Oh, that's just the tip of the iceberg. As a young lawyer Alito was also opposed to murder rights, drunk driving rights, grand larceny rights, and rape rights. The kid was a loose cannon! And I don't think he's really gotten any wiser with age.

Actually, Alito didn't use his position as a government lawyer to oppose any legislatively established abortion "rights," and instead he denied that the Constitution contains such rights. Which it doesn't. Many pro-abortion liberals have taken the same position.

96% Of Suicide Bombers Are From Outside Iraq

I wonder if the "insurgency" has a similar ratio of Iraqis to non-Iraqis:
Lynch, who is an operations officer as well as a spokesman, said as a result the main entry point for foreign fighters has now been shut down and al-Zarqawi is having a difficult time carrying out attacks. At least 96 percent of suicide bombers are from outside of Iraq, he added.

“His weapon of choice is suicide bombers,” Lynch said. “In the month of November: only 23 suicide attacks; the lowest we’ve seen in the last seven months, the direct result of the effectiveness of our operations.”
