The Left's idea of "patriotism"

Chris Bowers tackles the seemingly insurmountable task of explaining how he and his fellow liberals can be liberal and patriotic at the same time. He meanders through a convoluted 1176 word rant before concluding that it's okay for liberals to like America because America supposedly has no defined culture, and therefore you can pretend it's anything you want it to be instead of what it actually is, in that liberal scourge, reality.

He also whines about how the reason liberals "hesitate to identify as patriotic" and the reason so many of them groan when one of them identifies as such is because of the "culture surrounding patriotism." Oh, sure, that's what patriotic people do, isn't it? They hesitate, "to personally self-identify as patriotic," and then their "patriotic" liberal friends wince, groan, and make signs of discomfort when someone mentions that they love their country.

Patriotism is a lot like heroism in the military, something else which liberals don't understand. If you're actually either of those, you don't have to brag about it or point it out like John Kerry; it shows.

Liberalism isn't patriotic; when liberals talk about loving America, they're talking about the hypothetical, perfect liberal America that only exists in their minds. But calling that love is like a husband telling his wife that he loves her for the "perfect woman" she could become, not for who she is.

Patriotism is base and servile emotional tripe..... the basic mechanism involves fear, tradition, punitiveness etc... you unknowingly fall into the same trap the "patriotic" germans did in the 1930s.

The point is to rise above those emotions and view these issues with clarity of mind...not clouded by fear.
