"Free" healthcare failing

In Sweden, over 45% of patients have to wait longer than 90 days. In America, you can pull into the doctor's office on the very day and get treated.

Access to a commodity, like healthcare, is controlled by supply and demand. A high supply and low demand means that it will cost next to nothing; free as dirt! But if the supply is low and demand is high, prices will be astronomical; diamonds are forever.

When you make something free, you remove the constraint supply places on demand, and demand skyrockets indefinitely. But the supply is not infinite in reality. There is only so much to go around. Which is what leads to 90 day waiting periods, with the system being clogged by many frivolous demands that would be otherwise weeded out by the cost they would impose on people.

When you make healthcare free, your neighbor will call the ambulance for their kid's scraped knee while you lay dying of a heart attack.

Go read the recent note I posted on Facebook about John McCain. A high-class ivy league college graduate told me that I must be against a universal health care program on the grounds that I don't think poor people should get health care.
